DUAL STUDIES

Theory and practice, optimally combined

University or vocational training? You can do both! Althoff Hotels works together with the IU Internationale Hochschule

to offer combined vocational front of house training and a bachelor of arts in tourism management. It will open up a wide range of opportunities for you in your further career development.

The degree programme combines business skills with the know-how acquired during your vocational training, develops your personal skills and management qualifications and optimally prepares you for pursuing a professional career.

Requirements:

  • General qualification to attend university (Abitur) or qualification to attend a university of applied sciences (Fachhochschulreife)
  • Training contract in an Althoff Hotel of your choice
  • Assessment Day IU

Duration of training and studies:

  • 3.5 years of vocational training (IHK diploma) and studies at an IU campus

Dual bachelor’s degree in tourism management

Are you a keen traveller and enjoy planning holidays for others? The dual vocational and study programme in tourism management would then be perfect for you. The degree programme combines business skills with the know-how acquired during your vocational training, develops your personal skills and management qualifications and optimally prepares you for pursuing a professional career.

Training content:

  • Placements in all hotel departments (F&B, housekeeping, purchasing, technical, front of house, reservations, banquet sales, sales and marketing)
  • Quality standards learning and management
  • Guest reception and hospitality
  • Serving food and drinks
  • Planning and implementing events
  • Acquiring a cross-departmental sense of responsibility

Dual bachelor’s degree in culinary management

Are you passionate about cooking and want to turn your hobby into a profession? Althoff Hotel Collection has the best gourmet chefs and is the restaurant market leader with a total of 8 Michelin stars.

The dual vocational/bachelor training in the culinary management programme teaches you the essentials for pursuing a career in the hotel and catering sector. In addition to the craft of cooking, questions such as ‘What makes a good gastronomy concept?’ or ‘What role do business management issues have here?’ are addressed.

Dual study programme in cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences

Combining theory and practice to achieve success

Althoff Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg and the university of applied sciences (FHDW) in Bergisch Gladbach, Germany cooperate in the business administration bachelor (B.A.) in tourism and event management. Theory and practice alternate in 3-month periods.

The degree programme combines business skills with the know-how acquired during your vocational training, develops your personal skills and management qualifications and optimally prepares you for pursuing a professional career.

Requirements:

  • General qualification to attend university (Abitur) or qualification to attend a university of applied sciences (Fachhochschulreife)
  • Practical placement at Althoff Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg 
  • Admission to the FHDW

Duration of training and studies:

  • 3 years of dual studies at the FHDW Bergisch Gladbach

Dual study programme in cooperation with the Baden-Württemberg Duale Hochschule (Cooperative State University)

Theory and practice optimally combined

We cooperate with the DHBW in the business administration bachelor degree (B.A.) in tourism, hospitality and gastronomy / hotel and gastronomy management. Theory and practice alternate in 6-month periods. 

The degree programme combines business skills with the know-how acquired during your vocational training, develops your personal skills and management qualifications and optimally prepares you for pursuing a professional career.

Requirements:

  • General qualification to attend university (Abitur) or qualification to attend a university of applied sciences (Fachhochschulreife)
  • Practical placement at an Althoff Hotel
  • Admission to the DHBW

Duration of training and studies:

  • 3 years of dual study at the DHBW in Ravensburg

Front of house & Hospitality administrators

Hardly any other sector provides the kind of all-round training you will receive as a front of house trainee or trainee hospitality administrator. Front of house staff work directly with guests, e.g., at reception or in service, while hospitality administrators ensure the smooth running of administrative departments such as accounting, HR and purchasing. 

Training content:

  • Preparing guest rooms and monitoring service standards
  • Guest reception and hospitality
  • Serving food and drinks
  • Independently managing the hotel’s till system and settling guest accounts
  • Planning and implementing events
  • Involvement in developing marketing activities
  • Carrying out sales negotiations and preparing quotations
  • Processing of documentation and procedures in the HR department
  • Storing and inspecting inventory
  • Corresponding with guests

Requirements:

  • You have a secondary school leaving certificate, intermediate school leaving certificate or general qualification to attend university (Abitur)*
  • You are a good communicator and able to work in a team
  • You have a basic knowledge of a foreign language
  • You are flexible and able to work under pressure
  • You enjoy working in sales and have organisational skills
  • You are service-minded and have very good interpersonal skills

Restaurant hosts

Do you like having direct contact with people? Restaurant hosts serve and assist guests, work in the restaurant or hotel at the buffet and in the bar. Althoff Hotel Collection has the best gourmet chefs and sommeliers and is a restaurant market leader with a total of 8 Michelin stars. As a trained restaurant host, you mainly specialise in the restaurant sector and are constantly in direct contact with guests.

Training content:

  • Preparing guest rooms and monitoring service standards
  • Guest reception and hospitality
  • Serving food and drinks
  • Planning and implementing events
  • Advising guests and preparing quotations
  • Service, food and beverage customers
  • Managing till systems

Requirements:

  • You have a secondary school leaving certificate, intermediate school leaving certificate or general qualification to attend university (Abitur)*
  • You are a good communicator and able to work in a team
  • You have a basic knowledge of a foreign language
  • You are flexible and able to work under pressure
  • You enjoy working in sales and have organisational skills
  • You are highly service-minded and have excellent interpersonal skills

Chefs

Are you passionate about cooking and want to turn your hobby into a profession? As a chef, you are not only responsible for preparing meals, but also for calculating and organising menus and courses.

  • Preparing food

  • Preparatory work in service and guest assistance
  • Learning HACCP guidelines (hygiene regulations)
  • Cost control, inventory management and kitchen organisation

Requirements:

  • You enjoy preparing food
  • You have manual skills and are creative
  • You are quick to grasp different situations

Confectioners

Is confectionery the world you feel comfortable in and do you love to indulge your creative urge when baking? Confectioners work in hotel pâtisseries and in pastry shops, making delicious cakes, tarts and chocolates as well as all kinds of desserts as well as bread and rolls.

Training content:

  • Making desserts, cakes and pastries
  • Making chocolates
  • Learning HACCP guidelines (hygiene regulations)
  • Cost control, inventory management and kitchen organisation
  • Product presentation in dining rooms

Requirements:

  • You have a secondary school leaving certificate, intermediate school leaving certificate or general qualification to attend university (Abitur)*
  • You enjoy preparing desserts
  • You have manual skills and are creative
  • You are quick to grasp different situations
  • You are a good communicator and team player
  • You are flexible and able to work under pressure
  • You are good at arithmetic
  • You have a structured approach to work and good interpersonal skills

*Training as confectioner takes 3 years. The time can be shortened to 2.5 years if you hold an Abitur and perform well in your vocational and practical training.

Bakers

Do you like baking and would like to learn one of the oldest and most traditional crafts? Bakers are responsible for producing delicious baked products. This includes breads, rolls and desserts such as Danish pastries, as well as cakes, pies and desserts.   

Traning Content:

  • Making baked products and sweet pastries for the breakfast buffet and restaurants
  • Learning HACCP guidelines (hygiene regulations)
  • Cost control, inventory management and kitchen organisation
  • Product presentation in dining rooms

Requirements

  • You have a secondary school leaving certificate, intermediate school leaving certificate or general qualification to attend university (Abitur)*
  • You enjoy baking and making pastry products
  • You have manual skills and are creative
  • You are quick to grasp different situations

Event administrators

As an event administrator, you are responsible for the organisation and smooth running of events in the hotel. Events include everything from minor meetings and product presentations through to weddings with several hundred guests. 

Training content:

  • Planning and implementing hotel events
  • Preparing quotations and drafting contracts
  • Carrying out sales talks
  • On-site event support

     

Requirements:

  • You have a secondary school leaving certificate, intermediate school leaving certificate or general qualification to attend university (Abitur)*
  • You enjoy interacting with people 
  • You are highly service-minded
  • You have organisational skills and like selling
  • You are very aware of quality and have a high sense of responsibility
  • You are a good communicator and creative
  • You are flexible and able to work under pressure
  • You can work in a structured manner and have very good interpersonal skills

Sports and fitness specialists

Is the world of sports, fitness and wellness your thing? Sports and fitness specialists work, for example, in the spa, sauna and fitness area of a hotel where they are responsible for overall organisation, creating and implementing fitness plans, as well as supervising and monitoring hygiene at the pool.

Training content:

  • Assisting spa visitors
  • Developing arrangements for specific target groups to participate in sporting and non-sporting activities
  • Supervising activities offered to guests
  • Marketing the products on offer

Requirements:

  • You have a secondary school leaving certificate, intermediate school leaving certificate or general qualification to attend university (Abitur)*
  • You enjoy sporting activities 
  • You are a good communicator and able to work in a team
  • You have a basic knowledge of a foreign language 
  • You are flexible and able to work under pressure
  • You have organisational skills
  • You are highly service-minded and have excellent interpersonal skills

HR administrators

Do you easily connect with people and find administrative tasks come easy to you? As an HR administrator, you support staff from initial contact during the application process through to drafting contracts and final departure from the Company. You prepare job advertisements and write references, organise training courses and always have an open ear for the hotel staff.

Training content:

  • Supporting staff from the moment they join to the moment they leave the Company
  • Preparing job advertisements and applicant management
  • Conducting job interviews
  • Preparing references
  • Preparing workshops and training courses
  • Acquiring employment law knowledge

Requirements:

  • You have a secondary school leaving certificate, intermediate school leaving certificate or general qualification to attend university (Abitur)*
  • You have good people skills
  • You are a natural at administrative tasks
  • You are a good communicator and able to work in a team
  • You have a basic knowledge of a foreign language
  • You are flexible and able to work under pressure
  • You have a structured approach to work
  • You are highly service-minded and have excellent interpersonal skills

*Training as HR administrator takes 3 years. The time can be shortened to 2.5 years if you hold an Abitur and perform well in your vocational and practical training.

Vocational training plus higher qualifications

Several of our 5* hotels work with the FHG e.V. (an association of Germany’s leading hospitality educational institutions) to provide opportunities in gaining higher qualifications after completing vocational training. Front of house staff can obtain an additional qualification in hotel management after successfully passing the vocational examination, while chefs and restaurant hosts can obtain an additional qualification in kitchen and service management. Theory is taught at the Paul-Kerschensteiner-Schule, a state vocational school for the hotel and catering industry in Bad Überkingen, Germany.

Training content:

The training content is broader than in the standard vocational training and goes into greater depth. 

Subjects include:

  • Specialist foreign language teaching in two foreign languages
  • Inventory science
  • Bar and kitchen technology
  • IT and law
  • Business administration

Requirements:

  • At the dual vocational college of the Paul-Kerschensteiner-Schule, you also have the opportunity to gain, alongside the IHK vocational qualification, also qualification to attend a university of applied sciences (Fachabitur) as long as you already hold an intermediate school leaving certificate.
